Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

SuperSpaceChick and The Nerdy Girlie came up with an awesome community project titled Five Fandom Friday. It's a weekly top five post about predetermine topics. It's a great way to see what everyone comes up with!!

This weeks list is Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today. For this list I decided to go way back, my younger years and pick the five that made me into the fan that I am.

5. Super Mario Bros series

My mother got my brother and I a NES for Christmas with Super Marios Bros, Kung Fu, and Donkey Kong 3. These games especially Super Mario stamped my love for video games. This is what started it all. I am a NES girl but I have a special place in my heart for the Dreamcast.

4. X-men the animated Series

90s had some great cartoons like Darkwing Duck, Gargolyes but it was the X-men that got me into the world of MARVEL & comics. Everyone disliked Jubilee but she was and still is my favorite X-men. I looked up a comic shop and would always make a weekly trip to buy whatever comics they had that would feature Jubilee or just X-men. I have venture out to other series/companies now but it was this cartoon that opened my eyes to the world of comics.

3. Princess of Power

I am a child of the 80s and I grew up watching She-ra, He-man, Transformers, Go-BOTS, Rainbow Brite, JEM and the HOLOGRAMS, Popples, and oh man so many other shows but my love for She-ra has remained strong. I was obsessed with this series. I was She-ra for Halloween multiple times. I wanted all the toys, the accessories, if it had She-ra on it I wanted it. I think this is where you can pin point the start of me collecting toys or becoming a hoarder. Take your pick.

2. Sailor Moon

I have talked about my love for this series so much on blog I bet you guys are sick of it! Sailor Moon is one of two series that really sucked me into what we call fandom. I discovered it during my high school years and loved it. We had a small group of us that would get together and chat about what episode we saw, the newest items we bought, or trade stickers/cards with each other. It was my mini anime club before I knew what anime was. This is the series that had me find out about Anime and with the help of the internet, I was able to get more Sailor Moon eps and get other series in the same genre.

1. The X-Files

I was shipping before I knew what shipping was. Mulder and Scully were my OTP before I heard of the term. Speaking of which when did the term OTP start? Anyone? When the internet started becoming known to me, I would go to the public library and use their computers to get online. I'm talking the days of dial up. You could hear your modem dialing in and making those noises letting you know that you are connecting. I would go to forums and chat with other fans about the latest episode. AOL chat rooms and IRC. The spazzing, the chatting, the shipping, everything started with this show.

And here we are. I think I did a mighty fine job picking stuff that have made me into the geek that I am today. There are of course other things and picking five was really hard.

Granted, reviewing this list has made me realize that I watch too much television but you know what? That's mighty fine by me. Haha...

Oh and honorable mention: Watching the Nightmare on Elm Street films cemented my love for horror films. I love me a good horror film. Show me anything from the 80s like Chopping Mall, The Blob, The Stuff, Killer Klowns, Critters, etc and we are golden!

  4. Omg! I thought I was the only kid in the world who loved Jubilee! She's still my favorite and I want those pink glasses! I super loved the opening music to the cartoon, too. Omg it was so good.

And Xfiles!! Aaaaah. I always shipped Scully and Mulder too. They were soulmates, dammit! Did you want to grow up to be an FBI agent? Because I totally did.. The truth is out there!

  6. Other than Sailor Moon, I would swear we shared a childhood. Although Star Wars could probably be in there for me.
