Black Widow Forever Red - Book Review (Chapter Sampler)

I am back with another book review! I've been lazy this year with my reading but when I came across the sampler book for the new YA book Black Widow Forever Red while at San Diego Comic Con I had to make time to read it.

Enter the world of the Avengers' iconic master spy

Natasha Romanoff is one of the world's most lethal assassins. Trained from a young age in the arts of death and deception, Natasha was given the title of Black Widow by Ivan Somodorov, her brutal teacher at the Red Room, Moscow's infamous academy for operatives.

Ava Orlova is just trying to fit in as an average Brooklyn teenager, but her life has been anything but average. The daughter of a missing Russian quantum physicist, Ava was once subjected to a series of ruthless military experiments-until she was rescued by Black Widow and placed under S.H.I.E.L.D. protection. Ava has always longed to reconnect with her mysterious savior, but Black Widow isn't really the big sister type. Until now.

When children all over Eastern Europe begin to go missing, and rumors of smuggled Red Room tech light up the dark net, Natasha suspects her old teacher has returned-and that Ava Orlova might be the only one who can stop him. To defeat the madman who threatens their future, Natasha and Ava must unravel their pasts. Only then will they discover the truth about the dark-eyed boy with an hourglass tattoo who haunts Ava's dreams. . .

Let me start off that the sampler I was given at the Disney publishing booth at San Diego Comic Con only had the first 12 chapters. My review will be based of that!

The story starts with Black Widow on assignment, fighting off the bad guys, saving a young child, and things go boom. The story then picks up 8 years later and you spend the rest of the chapters getting to know about the girl she saved, Ava, her friend Oksana and there is also Alex and his buddy Dante. The book ends when Black widow makes an appearance and bullets fly.

The Good:
  • Love that there are 2 other young woman in the story
  • While you are reading the story (present) there are S.H.I.E.L.D. LODD Investigation reports in front of the chapters so it gives you a glimpse of what is happening in the future/after the story ends.
  • Agent Coulson makes an appearance through the LODD pages but they are mainly of Agent Romanov.
  • The action in the beginning of the story and in the end of the sampler were really good. Sometimes I find action paragraphs hard to follow but Stohl did a great job. I was ablet to picture it.
  • Reference note in Black Widow's file says "See Rogers, Steve and Barnes, James" and I'm like WHAT DOES IT MEAN!
The Bad:
  • After it jumped 8 years, the story felt a bit slow for my taste. It was setting up the teens (Ava, Oksana, Alex, and Dante though not sure how much of Aksana and Dante will be in it after Chapter 12) which I get but don't know, it was just slow. Probably could of cut out a chapter or two about that. It did pick up once Black Widow popped back in.
  • Lack of Black Widow in a book that is about her. Again, hoping this changes in later chapters since I am reading a chapter sampler that only gave me 12 chapters/ 108 pages.
  • OMG the few pages of "She's so pretty" and "he's so handsome" HEART EYES between Ava and Alex when they met. I did have to remind myself - YA novel but really? Let me guess, they end up together in the middle of this book? (This one is my issue but hoping in the later chapters it's a bit better)
So what are my thoughts? A bit slow when introducing the teens but over all I like it and I need to know what happens after Black Widow "began firing back into the sky!" I have not read anything written by Margaret Stohl. It seems she is the co-author of the Beautiful Creatures series. I have heard mixed reviews about the books and really bad reviews about the film but I did enjoy Black Widow Forever Red and I plan on picking it up when it is released on October 13, 2015!

You can pre order it from Amazon!

Disclaimer: I got the chapter sampler of Black Widow Forever Red ( 12 chapters only) for free from the Disney Publishing at San Diego Comic Con. Thoughts on this book are of my own.
